Hermès Kelly

A structured flap bag with a single handle, named for Grace Kelly who used it to shield her pregnancy from photographers in 1956. One of the most elegant silhouettes in luxury history.

Retail price range: €8,000 – €300,000+

The Kelly predates the Birkin by decades — Hermès introduced the Sac à dépêches (dispatch bag) in the 1930s. Princess Grace of Monaco used a crocodile version to shield her pregnant belly from photographers in a 1956 Life magazine cover, and Hermès renamed the bag in her honour in 1977.

Where the Birkin is casual enough for daily life, the Kelly has a more formal, structured character — it demands to be carried in the hand or on the elbow, not on the shoulder. This ceremonial quality is part of its enduring appeal.

Sellier vs Retourné

The Kelly comes in two constructions: sellier (rigid, with exposed stitching on the outside, more formal) and retourné (softer, stitching on the inside, slightly more casual). Most collectors have a preference — sellier Kellys are often considered the purer silhouette but retourné is more practical.

Standard sizes run from 20cm (Mini Kelly) to 40cm. The 28cm and 32cm are the most popular everyday sizes.
