Hardware refers to all the metal elements on a bag: the clasps and closures (turn-locks, push-locks, magnetic snaps), chains and strap rings, zip pulls, feet (metal studs on the base that protect the leather), and decorative elements like logo plates and buckles.
Hardware quality is one of the clearest markers of bag quality and authenticity. Luxury hardware is typically brass or zinc alloy with a plated finish — gold, silver, palladium (a cooler silver tone), or ruthenium (a darker, almost black tone). It should feel weighty, operate smoothly, and resist tarnish.
Hardware and Aging
All plated hardware will show wear eventually — typically as brassing on raised edges where the plating meets friction. This is normal and often considered part of the bag's character. Heavy tarnishing or pitting indicates lower quality metal or significant age. Replating hardware is possible but expensive and changes the aesthetic slightly.
