Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chips are now embedded in many newer luxury bags as a secure authentication tool. Louis Vuitton has replaced date codes with RFID chips in its bags produced from around 2021. The chip can be scanned by LV's internal system to verify production details, but the information isn't directly accessible to consumers with standard NFC readers.
Other brands are following: Chanel and Hermès have introduced chip-based authentication in selected pieces, and some resale platforms are developing chip-reading tools for their verification processes. For collectors, the presence of an RFID chip — verified by a brand service point — is a strong authentication signal for newer pieces.
