Chain Strap

A metal-link shoulder strap — an alternative to leather straps that adds formality, flexibility, and a distinctively luxurious weight.

Chain straps are shoulder straps made from metal links rather than leather or fabric. They're associated with the most formal tier of luxury bags — the Chanel Classic Flap's gold chain-and-leather strap is the most referenced — though chain straps now appear across the market from entry-level to ultra-luxury.

Quality chain straps use real metal (typically brass with gold or silver plating) and feel substantial against the body. The weight — anywhere from 100 to 300 grams for a typical chain — is part of the tactile experience. Cheap chains feel hollow and rattle; luxury chains have a solid, smooth movement.

Chain Wear

Chain straps can mark delicate clothing and leathers over time where the links rub. Many collectors use a thin layer of felt or leather protector between chain and fabric. The plating on chain links wears first at points of contact — regular polishing with a soft cloth maintains finish, but avoid abrasive polishes which remove plating rather than restore it.
