Monogram Canvas

Louis Vuitton's signature coated canvas featuring the interlocking LV initials and floral motifs. Nearly indestructible and immediately recognisable worldwide.

The Louis Vuitton Monogram Canvas is a coated fabric featuring the interlocking 'LV' initials alongside the quatrefoil and four-pointed star motifs that Georges Vuitton introduced in 1896 to honour his late father. The design was intended as an anti-counterfeiting measure — the repeating pattern was harder to reproduce accurately at the time. It has since become one of the world's most recognised luxury marks.

The canvas is not leather but a coated textile — a cotton canvas that has been treated with a PVC coating for waterproofing and durability. This makes it extraordinarily tough: resistant to water, scratches, and most abrasion. A monogram canvas bag used daily for twenty years will typically look remarkably similar to its original condition, minus the expected patination on the vachetta trim.

Authenticity and the Monogram Pattern

The monogram pattern is one of the most rigorously maintained in luxury fashion. LV cuts the canvas so the pattern is deliberate and centred — the LV logo should never be cut in half at a seam. The pattern continues unbroken across the front panel and is aligned across seams. On counterfeit pieces, the pattern is often slightly off-register, misaligned at seams, or features distorted LV lettering.
