Vachetta leather is a natural, untreated cowhide (vache is French for cow) used by Louis Vuitton for the handles, trim, and base of its classic monogram and damier canvas bags. Unlike most leathers, it contains no dyes or protective coating, which means it responds directly to oils, sunlight, and moisture.
New vachetta is pale cream or honey-coloured. Over months and years of use, it darkens through a process called patination, eventually becoming a rich caramel or cognac brown. Collectors often refer to a bag's 'patina' — the more developed the colour, the more the bag has been loved.
Caring for Vachetta
Because vachetta is untreated, it marks easily: water spots, fingerprints, and dark contact marks can be difficult or impossible to remove once set. Keep new vachetta bags away from moisture, handle the trims as little as possible until they've developed some patina (which makes them slightly more forgiving), and store bags away from direct light to prevent uneven colouring.
