Saffiano Leather

A cross-hatch embossed calfskin leather trademarked by Prada. Exceptionally durable and resistant to scratches and moisture.

Saffiano leather is a type of calf leather embossed with a cross-hatch pattern and treated with a wax finish. The pattern and technique were originally trademarked by Mario Prada in the early 20th century, though variations are now produced by other manufacturers for other brands.

The wax coating makes saffiano highly resistant to water, scratches, and stains — arguably the most durable luxury leather available. It's used across Prada's handbag range and on leather goods like card holders and wallets, where wear resistance is paramount.

Saffiano vs. Other Prada Leathers

Prada also uses nappa (smooth calfskin) and calf leather without the saffiano embossment. Nappa is softer and more traditional but less durable. For everyday bags that see real use, saffiano is the pragmatic Prada choice — bags often look nearly new after years of use.
