Piping

The leather edging that runs along the seams and edges of a bag — common on Louis Vuitton bags and prone to peeling over time.

Piping is the leather trim applied to the edges and seams of certain bags, creating a clean, rounded edge rather than a raw sewn edge. It's common on Louis Vuitton canvas bags, where a vachetta leather piping runs along the bag's top edge, zipper seam, and sometimes along the base.

Piping is one of the most maintenance-intensive elements of LV bags specifically. Over time and with regular use, the piping can crack, harden, or begin to peel away from the underlying canvas. This is a known issue with LV bags from certain eras and is a significant negotiating point when buying pre-loved.

Piping Repair

Piping repair is offered by most specialist bag restoration services and typically costs £80–200 depending on the extent of the damage and the service. Louis Vuitton's own After-Sales service also replaces piping on bags in their range. If you're buying a bag with piping issues, factor this cost into your price assessment.
